More than 18,000 people voted for the trees participating in the Tree of the Year contest from the beginning of September to the middle of October. The village with only 400 inhabitants, Zengővárkony's nominee, the survivor sweet chestnut won the first place with 4088 votes. The jury awarded the title "Hero Tree" to the white poplar trees in Fonyód, and the National Forestry Association granted its special prize to Gyulaj's lime tree.
