The Almond Tree of the Snowy Hill in Pécs is the Hungarian Tree of the Year in 2018

At the online voting starting at the end of July, the Almond Tree of the Snowy Hill in Pécs won the Tree of the Year competition with a total of 4779 votes, over a thousand votes ahead the second contestant. The Trees of the Romai Riverside came in second, and were awarded with the Hero Tree title, too. The third was the Tree of Ceglédbercel (or "chicken-tree" as it is called because of its strange form). The National Forestry Association's special prize was given to a huge oak tree, the Big Tree of Szebény. The winning almond tree of Pécs is a twisted, more than 100-year-old tree that welcomes the arrivals at the Church of Our Lady of the Snow in Pécs. The Trees of the Romai Riverside owning the title of Hero Tree are symbols of harmonious coexistence of man and nature, the life of which are threatened by the flood dam planned to be built by the local government.
